Blocking (or insolation) diodes prevent reverse current flow from the batteries to the solar array at night or from a high voltage
series string of solar modules to a low voltage string of solar modules (low voltage could be due to physical damage to one solar
module or improper wiring of the solar modules).
Since current is always flowing through a blocking diode in the forward direction during the day, it is important to choose a diode that has a low voltage drop such as a Shottky type with a typical 0.5V drop.
Despite what some solar module manufacturers say,we do not recommend installing a blocking diode inside the sealed confines of a solar module junction box due to their high operating temperature.
Most solid-state charge regulators (Morningstar, Xantrex) have the blocking diodes built into their electronics so an external blocking diode is not required.
